Balafon

These Djeli Bala (Balaphone/Balafon) are are hand-carved and individually tuned from Hare (Khadi) wood, the premier wood used in making Bala from Guinea, West Africa. Below each key is a calabash gourd that serves as its resonator. Each gourd has a small hole with very thin paper over it, which creates the buzzing resonate that is so common in West African music. The 20 or 21 keys of the Bala are well tuned to each other in the diatonic and have great sound. Rhythm House Drums is excited to be able to offer such well made traditional instruments and such an affordable price.
