Gita

The Gita is hand made in Mali, West Africa. The gourds are solid with no cracks or thin spots and its walls are thick enough to withstand being played with force. As an instrument, it can be played in many different styles. However, there are two common styles that are most often used.

The first is to use it as a drum by placing it on the ground or on a pillow. With the proper technique, a bass, tone and slap can be produced much the same way as they would be played on a djembe or conga. In this style, it can be used to play rhythms and/or practice at a lower volume so as not to disturb others.

The second popular way that it can be used is somewhat different. Often, dancers will turn the Gita over and hold it like a bowl while spinning it back and forth on the horizontal plane. The cowries make contact with the gourd with each spin giving the Gita an effect similar to the shekere. This style is especially good for dancers in a performance group in that it adds another percussive element to the overall ensemble.

The picture is only a representation of the Gita you will receive, but all are very similar and have an excellent sound.
